Library Assistant II—Posted July 1, 2008

Responsibilities

This part-time (50%) position in the MINITEX Document Delivery unit is responsible for the processing of MINITEX interlibrary loan requests at the U of M Wilson Library.

70% – Coordinate and supervise the daily operation of processing MINITEX interlibrary loan requests at Wilson Library:
  • Assign and monitor daily workflow in libraries to meet MINITEX/DTU standards of timeliness and accuracy.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of library resources, including scope of collections, records and circulation policies.
  • Maintain copy machines, Ariel workstations and supplies.
  • Search MNCAT, OCLC or other appropriate tools to verify requests, identify holding locations and maintain workflow standards.
  • Search online, CD-ROM, and print indexes to make citation corrections on requests.
  • Determine appropriate handling of unverified or problem requests.
  • Work with other MINITEX staff members on requests with problem citations when appropriate.
  • Maintain current written procedures for requesting processing.
  • Collect data and statistics as needed and provide statistical information to appropriate staff members.
20% – Supervise student staff:
  • Hire, train, supervise, evaluate and discipline student employees.
  • Monitor daily workflow, communicate procedures and procedural changes.
  • Monitor daily workflow of staff at Wilson Library.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of tasks performed by staff.
10% – Enhance the overall effectiveness of Document Delivery and MINITEX services:
  • Participate actively and positively in meetings that involve the Document Delivery staff and/or the entire MINITEX staff.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with co-workers in Document Delivery, University Library staff, MINITEX staff and MINITEX participants.
  • Work closely with supervisor and co-workers in Document Delivery to insure high level of efficiency and quality of processes.
  • Work with various groups and task teams that focus on office-wide or organizational concerns, as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

Two years of college coursework and/or relevant library experience. The applicant must be able to lift 30 lbs. This position requires extensive standing and walking.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who show ability to adapt easily to procedural changes, work with detail, work independently, and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. Proven productivity and accuracy is desired.

Previous library experience with database searching (ILLiad, OCLC, and Aleph/MnCAT) is preferred. Previous supervisory or lead worker experience is helpful.
