Library Assistant 2—Posted November 20, 2009
Minitex is a publicly supported network of libraries working cooperatively to improve library
services. Resource Sharing is a service in which Minitex participating libraries transmit loan
and photocopy requests to the central office. The Minitex staff locates and retrieves needed
materials and sends them to the requesting library.
Responsibilities
85% – Responsible for the verification of Minitex interlibrary loan requests
and processing of Internet resource materials:

Search the University of Minnesota library database (MNCAT) to identify internet resource materials.
Check availability for interlibrary loans (ILL) and print.
- Update various systems as appropriate to indicate request status.
- Identify libraries with recurring citation, verification, location, or format errors and notify supervisor.
- Key requests in MnLINK VDX and update various systems as appropriate.
- Maintain current written procedures for request processing.
- Identify referral location for verified requests and determine appropriate referral priority.

Search MNCAT, OCLC, or other appropriate bibliographic tools to verify requests, identify holding
locations, and maintain workflow standards.
- Collect data and statistics if needed and provide statistical information to appropriate staff members.

Screen, interview, hire, train students on VDX keying. Assess student progress. Coordinate scheduling of
students as needed according to workflow. Keep students informed of changes in procedures.
15% – Enhance the overall effectiveness of Document Delivery and Minitex services.

Participate actively and positively in meetings that involve the Document Delivery staff and/or the entire
Minitex staff.

Establish and maintain positive relationships with co-workers in Document Delivery, University library staff,
Minitex staff, and Minitex participants.

Attend workshops and conferences as appropriate, share information learned with other Minitex staff using
appropriate communication methods.

Work closely with supervisor and co-workers in Document Delivery to insure high level of efficiency
and quality of processes. Provide assistance when appropriate to other Library Assistants.
- Work with various groups and task teams that focus on office-wide or organizational concerns, as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
Two years of college coursework and/or library experience to include library database searching.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who show ability to adapt easily to procedural changes, work with detail,
work independently, and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. Proven productivity and accuracy is
desired.
Previous library experience with database searching (Aleph, OCLC, and MnCAT) preferred. Previous supervisory or
lead worker experience preferred.
