Carla Dewey Urban

Carla Dewey Urban I grew up in neat places like Brazil, Minnesota and Ethiopia. I have a B.A. from Carleton College and a M.A. from Tulane University in Latin American Studies in addition to my MLS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. With a last name like "Dewey," how could I be anything but a librarian? On top of that, my mom is a librarian, too (she directed the Bethel College library for a while and was one of the founders of the CLIC consortium) so I guess I was destined for this field.

For five years I was the Latin American Cataloger for the Tulane University Library down in New Orleans, so if you need any help cataloging Spanish, Portuguese or French materials, give me a call (I kind of miss it...). For fun I play Ultimate Frisbee, putter in the garden, travel, cook and eat.

Virginia Dudley

Virginia Dudley I began my library career in technical services at the University of New Mexico. After a hiatus of a few years, I joined the library world again at the University of Minnesota, working in collection development, reference and technical services.

During this time I took time off to get my M.A. in Library and Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. I was also "loaned" for two years to Metropolitan State University to develop library services there. Immediately prior to joining the MINITEX staff, I was team leader for Area Studies on the Materials Acquisition and Control Team at the University of Minnesota Libraries.

Carlos Portillo

Carlos Portillo My involvement with library work started as a student at the University of Minnesota, where I received a B.A. from the Classical Studies department in, yes, Latin. Instead of pursuing a career in the challenging and high paying world of Latin, I chose to work for MINITEX.

For my first two and a half years at MINITEX I ran the Serials Exchange Program. Currently, I am the Library Assistant II for the BATS unit. My current responsibilities include processing all those wonderful OCLC forms, maintaining "The Files," some phone support and whatever else the coordinators happen to toss on my desk. (Note: There is no word for assistant in Latin... the Romans had slaves... kinda starts you thinking, doesn't it?)

I currently live in Minneapolis and my interests include tinkering with computers, all types of games, anything from the Classical and Mediaeval ages and most things Hispanic.

Sara Ring

Sara Ring I grew up in Wisconsin before migrating to the Twin Cities. Here I earned my B.A. in Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature. I worked at Magrath Library on the St. Paul campus for a couple of years and discovered the library world.

I then moved back to Wisconsin and got my M.A. in Library and Information Studies at UW-Madison. There I worked for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Library doing a little bit of everything: cataloging, ILL, reference, web development... I also worked for two years at UW-Madison's College Library providing reference and working on web development projects.

My interests include traveling, hearing live music, making film shorts with friends, camping, biking and rollerblading.

Mark Wilhelmi

Mark Wilhelmi After spending part of my childhood on a farm in Illinois, I earned degrees in history and counseling at Northern Illinois University. I've lived in such exotic places as Vermont and Washington, DC, where I got my M.L.S. from the Catholic University of America.

As a librarian I first worked in special libraries and then did cataloging for a library support firm. After returning to the Midwest I did some contract cataloging and some reference work before joining the BATS staff.

My interests include meditation, literature, current events and history (especially the Civil War). I also enjoy traveling, journaling and going to the movies.
