Accessing MEDD Documents on Apple Computers

How to find out your operating system (OS) version:

  • Click on the desktop.
  • Choose "About This Macintosh..." from the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen.
  • Make a note of your OS version. (for example, 9.2 or 10.2.8)

Older Apple Macintosh Systems

OS 9.x

  • Netscape 4.x
  • When the file download is completed, you may receive an "error –47" message with a choice of deleting the file or saving it and opening it manually.
  • Choose "Save" and the file will be saved as "getdoc.asp" on your desktop (or default location). This file should display correctly when double-clicked or opened manually from Acrobat Reader's File menu.
  • MS Internet Explorer v5.x
  • On most test systems, the file downloaded correctly, and was automatically displayed in Acrobat Reader.
  • If Acrobat Reader does not automatically launch and display the document, double-clicking the file "getdoc.asp" from the desktop (or default save location) or opening "getdoc.asp" from the file menu should display it.

Newer Apple Macintosh Systems

OS 10.2.x (Jaguar)

  • Netscape
  • Netscape was not tested.
  • Apple Safari
  • If Acrobat Reader does not automatically launch and display the document, start Acrobat Reader manually, and choose Open from the File menu.
  • Select the downloaded file, which should be either "getdoc.asp", or "getdoc.pdf". It should display correctly.
  • MS Internet Explorer v5.x
  • This OS/browser configuration caused the most trouble in our test systems.
  • After downloading your documents, you should find them saved to the desktop (or default save location) as "getdoc.asp".
  • Double-clicking this file may open a blank white Apple System Profiler window. If so, quit the Apple System Profiler by choosing Quit from the File menu, or with the Apple-Q keystroke.
  • Start Acrobat Reader manually and choose Open from the file menu. Selecting "getdoc.asp" should display the document correctly in Acrobat Reader.

OS 10.3.x (Panther)

  • Netscape
  • Netscape was not tested.
  • Apple Safari
  • On our test system, the file downloaded correctly, and was automatically displayed in Acrobat Reader.
  • If Acrobat Reader does not automatically launch and display the document, double-clicking the file "getdoc.pdf" from the desktop (or default save location) or opening "getdoc.pdf" from Acrobat Reader's file menu should display it.
  • MS Internet Explorer v5.x
  • On our test system, the file downloaded correctly, and was automatically displayed in Acrobat Reader.
  • If Acrobat Reader does not automatically launch and display the document, double-clicking the file "getdoc.pdf" from the desktop (or default save location) or opening "getdoc.pdf" from Acrobat Reader's file menu should display it.
