MnLINK Gateway Workshop—August 23, 2004

The operation of the MnLINK Gateway, which provides access to Minnesota's virtual union library catalog, was the topic of a day-long meeting for 140 library staff and others on August 23, 2004 in St. Paul. Discussion focused on benefits and options available through the national and international Z39.50 standard, which underlies the Gateway's capacity to search multiple library catalogs simultaneously and to return, sort and deduplicate the results received from these searches.

In the morning session, Julie Blume-Nye, Senior Product Designer at Fretwell-Downing, provided general information about how Z39.50 works and how it impacts the information that Minnesota library users and library staff can get via the Gateway. The afternoon's technical session included a discussion by Blume-Nye; Ralph Horton, Fretwell-Downing Vice President of Operations; and Al Rykhus of the MnPALS office.
