Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resources—February 28, 2006

A Report to the OCLC Membership

Co-Sponsored by MINITEX Library Information Network and Metronet.

What information users think:

  • Libraries are about BOOKS (period—end of thought).
  • Information users can tell good information on the World Wide Web from bad (by themselves, on the basis of checking out other Web sites).
  • Librarians should look at their libraries' services with new eyes—those of their libraries' users.

These and other responses of more than 3,300 information users across six English-speaking countries were identified in an OCLC report, "Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resources." Cathy De Rosa, OCLC Vice President for Marketing and Library Services, presented the report and participated in a discussion with library staff from MINITEX and Metronet libraries on February 28. Tom Shaughnessy, Executive Director of Metronet, introduced De Rosa.
