2006 University Libraries/MINITEX Reference Symposium—May 15, 2006
Library as Place: Physical Realms, Virtual Possibilities
Reference 2010: the Librarian 2.0 in Your Future presented by Stephen Abram,
Vice President, Innovation, for SirsiDynix and immediate past president of the
Canadian Library Association, at the May 15, 2006, Reference Symposium, Library as
Place: Physical Realms, Virtual Possibilities.
Co-Sponsored by University of Minnesota Libraries—Twin Cities and MINITEX
Library Information Network.
There is a global conversation going on right now about the next generation of the Web
happening under the name of Web 2.0. Like most innovations, it's already here and waiting
to diffuse. It's the McLuhanesque hot Web where true human interaction takes precedence
over merely 'cool' information delivery and email.
We're entering an era where we make a 180 degree turn and focus again on human interaction!
It's all about the user experience again—the essence of reference, and not just Web pages,
email, and digitization. It's about putting information into the real context of our users'
lives, work and play.
Of course it's still evolutionary and the Internet still matters but what are the skills and
competencies that Librarian 2.0 will need? The emergence of a highly evolved next generation
Web 2.0 ecosystem will be big, very big. Watch and listen to what is on the horizon and
Stephen's opinions and predictions for what adaptations we'll need to make to thrive in this
future scenario.
University Librarian Wendy Pradt Lougee introduced Abram.
