MnLINK User Group Meeting—November 12, 2008
The annual MnLINK User Group Meeting was held on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at the Northland
Inn in Brooklyn Park, MN. The presentations of our speakers—Lee Rainie, founding Director
of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, and Matt Goldner, Executive Director, End User
Services at OCLC, were audio-taped and are available on the links below along with the accompanying
slides. In the afternoon there was a panel of four Minnesota library directors who responded to
questions related to Open Source software options for libraries. This part of the program is not
available on the Web site.

Lee Rainie – How Libraries Can Operate in a Networked World
Lee Rainie is the Director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project. In this presentation
he describes how people operate today in a different kind of information ecology from the past.
There is more information, moving at a faster pace, via more digital devices, and made available
more readily via search tools. People and organizations can be their own media creators. Rainie
describes the findings of the Pew Internet & American Life Project about the way people use
the internet and their cell phones.
Matt Goldner – Helping Today's Web User Navigate the Depth and Breadth of Libraries
Matt Goldner, Executive Director, End User Services at OCLC talked about the need for librarians to
learn and understand how today's Web user finds, accesses and consumes information. He discussed
studies OCLC has done and how they are moving to deliver services that enable our member libraries
to thrive in this new information environment. WorldCat Navigator as a group discovery to delivery
solution is explained and discussed in this context.
