Quick Summary

Body

from Elsevier:

As part of our efforts to improve security and privacy for customers, Elsevier will implement a change to the web environment of our flagship product, ScienceDirect. We would like to make you aware of this change as it may potentially impact ScienceDirect’s availability for your library colleagues and users.

What's changing?

At the end of December 2018, ScienceDirect will shut off support for some outdated and insecure web security protocols.

What does this mean for you?

This affects how your organization connects to ScienceDirect, namely end user browsers and proxy software, such as EZProxy and Innovative's WAM.

In case your organization uses a proxy software or service to access ScienceDirect, you need to make sure it supports web security protocol TLS 1.2.

End users of ScienceDirect will also need to ensure their browser supports TLS 1.2. Most modern browsers support this already, but older versions of Internet Explorer need to have TLS 1.2 enabled in their advanced settings.

What can you do?

Before the end of December 2018, if you use EZProxy or WAM, please make sure that someone checks that TLS 1.2 is supported by your current version. If using EZProxy, for example, this means a minimum version of v6.1.16. All EZProxy instances hosted by OCLC already support TLS 1.2. If using Innovative Interfaces WAM, this may require a newer version and other environment changes.

Please contact your proxy vendor if you have questions specific to TLS 1.2 support in their products. If you have any general questions about this change, please contact the Elsevier Integration Support Team.

Please also start communicating to end users that they should upgrade their browsers, or enable TLS 1.2 for older versions of Internet Explorer.

Where can you get more information?

More details are available on the ScienceDirect Support Center.

We thank you in advance for your support and patience during this important transition process. Our goal is to minimize any inconvenience to you, your library staff and your users.

Sincerely,
Your ScienceDirect Team
