Body

During the week of June 6-10, I was at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I headed up SEI, a four-day residential workshop for new and emerging librarians interested in digital collections. The Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management (SEI) is a joint project of the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) and the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF). Attendees gained new skills and knowledge of rights and copyright, metadata for cultural heritage materials, embedded metadata, and digital preservation. Attendees were also introduced to digital humanities projects and digital collection project management.

These modules were taught by national leaders in the areas of digital collections, cataloging and metadata for digital collections, digital preservation, and digital humanities projects. Instructors included Martin Kalfatovic (Associate Director, Digital Programs and Initiatives Division at the Smithsonian Libraries), Euan Cochrane (Yale University), Johann Baumann (Pratt Institute), Marcia Focht (Binghamton University), Justin Schell (University of Michigan), and Nancy Sims (University of Minnesota), The program also tapped the talents of local University of North Carolina libraians to instruct on their projects - including North Carolina's involvement with the Digital Public Library of America. UNC staff included Stewart Varner, Julie Rudder, Laura Hart, and Lisa Gregory. After four very intense days our 42 attendees left North Carolina with new skills and knowledge.
